Exhibiting Artists, reminder: NO CLASS ON APRIL 25TH!

We won't be having lass on April 25th because all of the Saturday Studios teachers will be busy preparing your work for exhibition. We will be celebrating eight weeks of hard work and fun! Class will be held on May 2nd, followed by a reception from 11:30 - 12:00. All work will be sent home with you. See you then!

We are very excited about exhibiting the work from all the Saturday Studios classes! The exhibit will run from April 27 - May 2nd followed by a reception on Saturday, May 2nd at 11:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Class #7 - Now is it done?!

In class last week we finished up projects and talked about our exhibition. We took a look at the gallery space where our work will go and took a look at the show coming down in the Student Life Gallery. We were fortunate to run into the curators, who were nice enough to explain their thoughts about planning it.

It will be a really big show!

Hello to my students and to the adults who belong to them!

We are very excited about exhibiting the work from all the Saturday Studios classes! The exhibit will run from April 27 - May 2nd followed by a reception on Saturday, May 2nd at 11:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

This week (Saturday, 4/18), we will be focusing on finishing work and planning the exhibition. Considerations will include: When is an artwork done? Does describing an artwork add to our understanding or subtract from it? Does our art as a class have something in common? We will be selecting the work for the show and how it will be displayed. You will be receiving invitations at the end of class but here is a digital version in the meantime.

ALL WORK THAT ISN'T GOING INTO THE SHOW WILL BE GOING HOME WITH YOU THIS SATURDAY! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO CARRY IT IN OR SOME HELPING HANDS!

Falling Down and Building Up - Lesson 5

If you look at the blog post from April 3rd, you will find the lesson plan for the fabulous projects you are about to see. To sum it up:

"Through our experiences with mixed media sculpture, we know that it takes perseverance to make things stay together. Sometimes it is frustrating when our ideas don’t work out the way we’ve planned. Are there advantages and disadvantages to things falling apart?"

We looked at the work of artists Andy Goldsworthy (left) and Patrick Dougherty (below).

“When I make a work, I often take it to the very edge of its collapse and it’s a very beautiful balance.”
– Andy Goldsworthy

Below: the Freedom Tower and the Twin Towers

“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”
Nelson Mandela

We considered if time changes art. Below: The Temple of Poseidon, Athens

Best of all, we built!

In addition, we glazed our ceramics from our second class with the help of Emma, a MassArt ceramics and art education student. We knew that some pieces might break in the kiln but that we could glue them.

I came up with a new take on the job chart. It's that string thing below with the name tags.

Everyone was so efficient at clean up, I looked like this:

Thank you!!!
